Going mobile with health and health insurance

July 20, 2016

Smartphones can do anything from providing directions to taking photos to banking — even occasionally making a phone call. And they are more popular than ever. A Pew Research Center study reports that 64 percent of Americans own a smartphone.

Many individuals already use apps on their phones to track their exercise and eating habits. Popular apps keep track of steps, monitor sleep patterns and count calories. But more sophisticated apps are available to track health conditions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration even monitors apps used as accessories to smartphones or to transform a mobile platform to a regulated medical device.

Health insurance information

With the popularity of apps exploding, some insurance plans are providing apps that make it easy for users to check on their health insurance coverage including:

  • Reviewing benefits summaries
  • Tracking insurance claims
  • Checking on premium payments
  • Contacting customer service

When reviewing plan options with clients, you may want to explore if a coverage app exists or is in the planning stages. This may particularly appeal to younger health insurance consumers.
