Albuquerque, NM – Group health insurance options available to small businesses through beWellnm,
the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange, could play a key role in getting more New Mexicans insured during this time of uncertainty. Thanks to recently-adopted rule changes approved by the beWellnm Board of Directors, it is now easier than ever for small businesses to offer group health plans for their employees.
According to Maureen Manring, beWellnm’s director of outreach and communication, business owners
can provide the structure for their employees to enroll if they so choose, and they can do it without any
out-of-pocket expense to themselves or the business.
“These are difficult times for New Mexico small businesses, but they have an incredible opportunity
right now to make sure that their employees have coverage, and it doesn’t have to cost them anything,”
she said.

Albuquerque, NM – BeWellnm, the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange, reminds New Mexicans
that it is more important than ever for uninsured New Mexicans to find coverage, due to COVID-19. The beWellnm team, including navigators, enrollment counselors, agents, brokers, and staff are available tohelp New Mexicans. Some may qualify for special enrollment circumstances to find plans. The beWellnm office remains open, but highly encourages individuals to seek assistance through the phone or internet. “BeWellnm is taking every necessary precaution to keep New Mexicans safe, while still being available to help New Mexicans find insurance,” said Maureen Manring, beWellnm’s Director of Communications and Outreach. “I encourage every uninsured New Mexican to call us at 1-833-862-3935 or visit bewellnm.com for assistance. Having health insurance can offer peace of mind during a healthcare crisis such as this. If anyone you know is uninsured please encourage them to contact us.”
Some qualifying special enrollment circumstances include change in Medicaid eligibility, moving to a
new area, change in job or income, turning 26, having a baby, and a change in marital status within the
last 60 days. Additionally, Native Americans are able to enroll in a health plan through beWellnm
throughout the year. Many New Mexicans may qualify for low-cost or no-cost health insurance with the
help of premium assistance.

Amending the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange Act Is an Important Step in the Right Direction

There are big, positive changes coming soon to the New Mexico health insurance market. Not only will affordability of coverage for all New Mexicans be the driving goal at the center of those changes, but also better choice in plan offerings, greater ease in plan comparison and purchase, more coverage options for rural parts of the state, and a simpler process for acquiring coverage for people who find themselves bouncing back and forth with Medicaid eligibility. The changes will help us with our goal to enroll more New Mexicans and Native Americans in coverage which remains a great need in our state.
The New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange Board of Directors is charged with educating New Mexicans about the importance of obtaining coverage and helping them to find a plan that fits their needs and their budget.
As part of that mission, our Board voted unanimously to support a piece of legislation being introduced in Santa Fe which will give both the Exchange and the State of New Mexico a better opportunity to collaborate with one another in order to meet these very important goals.
House Bill 100, sponsored by State Representatives Deborah Armstrong and Micaela Lara Cadena, is an amendment to the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange Act. If passed, it will allow us to move forward more efficiently and effectively with the new State-Based Exchange and our transition off of the federal platform.
For the first time, the Exchange will be able to build upon its current partnerships with the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance, the New Mexico Human Services Department, and the state’s insurance carriers in order to implement standardized plans and eliminate barriers to different types of coverage. This is the best path toward to reducing costs for families and individuals on the Exchange.
House Bill 100 will also allow for more integration and collaboration between the Exchange and Medicaid so that we can better understand the uninsured population, reach them, and get them enrolled in a health plan.
Finally, this legislation gives us the control we need to have a smooth and successful transition to a State-Based Exchange in 2022. This move to a State-Based Exchange is necessary if we are going to keep our state marketplace responsive and available to New Mexicans regardless of changes and debates at the federal level.
I am not claiming that House Bill 100 is the answer to all of the challenges and changes we are facing in healthcare, but it will certainly be an important tool and a step in the right direction.
I want New Mexicans to know that our Board of Directors is represented by various state agencies, insurance carriers, health advocates, community-based organizations, and health care providers. We are appointed from a variety of sources and we have diverse backgrounds. You can be assured that a unanimous vote in favor of this effort demonstrates the broad commitment among New Mexico’s health policy leaders to work together toward better outcomes for all. Together, we are heading in the right direction.

BeWellnm Board of Directors today announced its decision to appoint
Cheryl Smith Gardner as the new beWellnm CEO. Smith Gardner is currently the executive
director of the Arkansas Health Insurance Marketplace (AHIM). She brings with her more than 10
years of extensive knowledge of health insurance policy and health care reform efforts.
Prior to her time at AHIM, Smith Gardner served as director of policy and strategy for the Utah
Health Exchange during its initial launch as one of only two existing health insurance exchanges
in the country in 2009. Utah’s Health Exchange model later served as a basis for other health
exchanges throughout the country. Her previous experience includes senior positions with top health
practice consulting firms and roles leading health care reform research, creation, implementation
and operation.
“The board and I are confident that Ms. Smith Gardner has the experience and knowledge to
successfully lead beWellnm through the rest of 2017 and into the future,” said beWellnm Board Chair
Dr. J. R. Damron. “In the time Linda Wedeen has served as interim CEO for beWellnm, the exchange
has seen steady year-over-year growth and the Board is grateful for her hard work and dedication to
New Mexico residents.”
Smith Gardner is expected to join the beWellnm team March 1, 2017. Until then, Wedeen will
continue her role as interim CEO.

Albuquerque, NM – beWellnm announced today that 52,358 New Mexicans selected a plan or were automatically re-enrolled in health coverage through beWellnm as of Feb. 22, 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Albuquerque, NM – beWellnm has learned that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has sent incorrect tax statements, known as Form 1095-A to some New Mexicans who had enrolled in health insurance through beWellnm in 2014. Most people received a correct Form 1095-A, however, those that are affected by this issue may be contacted in the coming days and can expect to receive a corrected form by early March.
